Things to do

Take a bike (rental available in Groet) and explore the many lanes and cycle paths in the area. The scenic LF1 long distance northsea bicycle route runs through the Schoorlse Duinen. For mountain bikers there is some fantastic mountainbike tracks too.

Pick one of the 8 marked walks (4,4 km - 23 km) and bring a picknick in your day pack. (There is a day pack in the apartment) There are tables and seats throughout the area and all with good views of the beautiful countryside around you. Spend the day on the beach. We have a wind/sun breaker in the apartment for those very windy days or very sunny days. The two nearest beaches are Hargen and Camperduin, both only 2 km: a 25 minute walk or a 10 minute cycle. about 1 km south of Hargen you will also find a beach that is only accessible for walkers and people on bikes: Schoorl aan Zee. All these beaches have one simple cafe/restaurant.

Go Fishing with your bare feet in the surf! (two rods available in the apartment). The north sea offers Sea Bass, Sole, Plaice, Turbot, Brill and many more. Just outside Groet you can buy your bait.

Visit the nearby villages

• 3 km from Groet: Schoorl, known for it's 50+ meter high climbing dune that reaches for the sky straight from the village center. And for those who prefer to just look at people climb the dune, there is plenty terraces to enjoy a cup of coffee.
• 5 km from Groet: Bergen, wonderful old central square with the ruined church in the center and plenty of cafe's and restaurants line the edge of the square. This village is known for it's art, has a few galleries and the Kranenburgh Museum is worthwhile visiting.

Both these windmills are still in operation and mill grains.

Enjoy the local cafe's and restaurants in Groet, of which there are plenty our favorite is Cafe Meereboer (the "living room" of Groet)

Explore the town of Alkmaar: Famous for it's cheese market but the city museum is definitely worth checking out. A provincial town with a medieval center and wonderful canals with a more relaxed atmosphere than Amsterdam.

Not many people know this, but the area north of Groet is the biggest tulip and bulb growing region in the Netherlands. Millions of tourists venture out to the Keukenhof in the Province of South Holland. But this area is a best kept secret. Every year, about mid April the fields explode into all the colors of the rainbow. In the village of Anna Palowna you will find the so called "Polder Tuin". A stately manor with well kept gardens, tulipmania ;-)
